A number of events will be held tomorrow to mark the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
In Fort Erie, the Native Friendship Centre will hold its inaugural Family Unity Walk.
Participants will be walking from the EarlyON Centre on Buffalo Rd. to Municipal Centre Drive then onto town hall.
The Friendship Centre will also be hosting "2 days of Teachings" today and tomorrow.
Meantime, The Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre, Town of Fort Erie and Fort Erie Diversity and Inclusion Coalition are encouraging everyone to actively acknowledge the terrible legacy of residential schools in Canada by spreading the colour orange throughout Fort Erie ahead of tomorrow's National Day of Truth and Reconciliation .
Centre officials note "The colour orange is symbolic of the tragedies that occurred at the hands of Canada’s residential school system. By hanging an orange shirt in your window, you are encouraging conversations between those who walk by your home."
The centre suggests raising awareness by hanging an orange shirt in the window of your home, tying an orange ribbon around a tree or raising an orange flag.
In Niagara Falls, a ceremony will be held at 9 am in the downtown Rosberg Park where the Every Child Matters flag will be raised then lowered to half mast
The city of Thorold will hold a flag raising ceremony today at city hall at 1:30.
City official note city hall will be closed tomorrow for the holiday and that's why the flag raising is today
In Welland, the public library will host a free Q and A session from 6 to 8 pm with Irene Goodwin and Teresa Edwards from the Legacy of Hope Foundation.
And in St. Catharines a community event will begin at 10 am tomorrow at city hall with guest speakers from the Native Centre speaking on the legacy of the residential school system
