Wellness Teams Need More Funding: NRP

Police Services Board hearing positive feedback about officers who have used the service

Some positive feedback for Niagara Regional police services board to make sure police officers receive help for stress on the job.

The member wellness team says the vast majority who received help felt better, and would seek out future help if needed.

Mental Health Clinician Brandy Sand says everyone is welcome, but they focus on high trauma and frequency.  "Our communication units use it, our ETU, our traffic unit, our major crimes, our sex assault, and domestic violence, our forensic unit... so we actually have 13 units that use it."

Other feedback includes recommending increased funding for more staff on this unit.

Dr. Tiffany Hunt showed a 94% satisfaction rate with the safeguarding unit, which helps with high risk exposure and trauma cases.

She says they reach out to officers regularly, including with mental health support teams.  "In addition to mental health, we know that it is very valuable and helpful to have members with a relatability factor, that have lived it, breathed it, and we currently have 29 members on our peer support team."

The NRP has satisfaction stats dating back to January.
