Fire Prevention Officers discover open uncovered electrical panel, insufficient smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and more violations on Welland property.
A Welland property owner has been fined $4,700 after Welland Fire and Emergency Services (WFES) discovered several fire safety violations.
On August 28th, 2019, WFES responded to a fire safety complaint about a property located on Regent Street.
Officials say Fire Prevention Officers discovered the southwest corner of the property was being used as a repair and salvage shop, while the basement was being used as a residence.
Officers discovered numerous fire safety violations in both the store front and the unlawful apartment, including six-foot high ceilings in the basement, inappropriate use of extension cords, an open, uncovered electrical panel in the bathroom shower stall in the basement and insufficient smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
WFES issued an "Immediate Threat to Life" notice, removed persons from the building, and disconnected power to the unit.
Another fire safety inspection on the northeast corner of the property turned up several Fire Code deficiencies.
Prosecution against the owner started after a re-inspection.
On January 27th, a Provincial Offences Court issued a $4,700 fine against the owner.
WFES is reminding residents that Fire Code compliance is always mandatory,
