Welland Council to Appear on Facebook

Council wanted more public engagement, it voted to include the live Facebook link to the city webpage

There will soon be more options on ways to view Welland city council debates and decision making for the city.

Council voted down streaming straight to Facebook, with arguments for and against public commentary.

Councillor Adam Moote spoke to why he preferred the live Facebook feed linked to the city's website.  "Folks that are interested will also have immediate access to the agendas and the documents that we are reading.  If they came into our council chambers they could pick up the agendas in person.  It makes it seamless, and understanding in reading the content on what we're voting for and how we're voting for it."

Councillor John Chiocchio hopes this will help Welland's voting record, the lowest in the last municipal election province wide.

He voted for the straight feed from Facebook.  "The whole idea about this is was if you're scrolling on social media... because everyone's on it every night, and if they tell you they're not, they are... but, they're scrolling through there and if you're scrolling through there and pick up a live session of the City of Welland, that new audience member might want to check it out."
