Health Minister and Deputy Premier Christine Elliott will not run for re-election in June, but will stay on as Health Minister until the spring.
Ontario's Health Minister and Deputy Premier will not run in the upcoming provincial election.
Christine Elliott tweeted out a statement this morning, noting she will stay on as Minister of Health from now until springtime.
Elliott, who has served as MPP for the riding of Newmarket-Aurora since 2018, commended the work of frontline health care workers and Premier Doug Ford during the pandemic.
"I want to express my profound admiration of and gratitude for all who provide care to Ontarians each and every day. They do so bravely, selflessly, and at great expense to their own personal lives and circumstances," she said.
"I also want to thank Premier Ford for his strong leadership guiding Ontario through this crisis and keeping Ontarians safe, as well as my colleagues and friends in our caucus and cabinet."
Ford also released a statement, saying Elliott is "more than a colleague", and he was "thrilled" to have her become a key part of his government's team.
Elliott's full statement is available below.
I recently shared with Premier Ford I will not be seeking re-election in June. Until then, I will continue what has been the honour of a lifetime to support our gov’t as Minister of Health.
