Two Back-to-Back Strike Days for Public Elementary Teachers in Niagara

Niagara's public elementary students could have an extra long weekend.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario says it will escalate it's rotating strikes, if a deal is not reached with the province before Friday January 31st.

The union is planning strikes for every day next week.

The one on Thursday February 6th would affect all public elementary schools across the province.

Niagara's teachers would also walk off the job the next day.

The ETFO says the following areas would be affected by a one-day strike on Friday February 7th.

- Algoma
- Greater Essex County
- Hamilton-Wentworth
- Limestone
- Niagara
- Toronto
- Toronto Catholic
- Waterloo
- York Region

It would also target Bloorview, John McGivney Children’s Centre, KidsAbility,Moosonee, Moose Factory and Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre school authorities.

ETFO President Sam Hammond would like Education Minister Stephen Lecce to send his negotiators back to the table.

"From ETFO’s perspective, fair contract talks must include: appropriate funding for Special Education; a strategy to address classroom violence; maintaining our internationally recognized Kindergarten program; fair hiring practices; class sizes that meet the needs of elementary students; and compensation that keeps up with inflation."
