Strike Looms at Canada Border Service Agency as Mediation Begins

More than 9-thousand Public Service Alliance of Canada members who work for Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) have secured a strike mandate.

Just as the summer travel season is set to begin, Canadians and visitors could find themselves stuck in long lines at the border.

More than 9-thousand Public Service Alliance of Canada members who work for Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) have secured a strike mandate.

The two sides entered mediation today and the union will be in a legal strike position as of Thursday (June 6th).

90 per cent of front line border officers are deemed essential which means they can't stop working during a strike but they can use the work to rule tactic.

The main sticking point in contract talks has been wages and retirement benefits.

A similar situation three years ago nearly brought commercial cross-border traffic to a standstill and caused major delays at border crossings and airports across the country.
