State of Emergency Still in Effect in Fort Erie

Many still without power

The state of emergency is still in effect for Fort Erie, but conditions are improving.

Mayor Wayne Redekop says he's not sure how long the state of emergency will remain in effect.

"We're probably going to keep it in place until we're satisfied that there are sufficient protections for those who still don't have power. Numbers are continuously decreasing, but we want to make sure that everyone who needs to be safe does have a place where they can go."

Redekop says there is still a little snow drifting on some roads, and he's encouraging drivers to be cautious.

Anyone who needs to warm up can head over to the Fort Erie Leisureplex.

Meanwhile, there is also a warming centre for Port Colborne residents impacted by the storm.

The warming centre at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre will be open until 7 PM tonight.

Pets can be brought to the warming centres, but need to be placed in a carrier with their own supply of bedding, food, medicine and litter.

The Niagara SPCA and Humane Society has also offered the use of two transport vehicles at the warming centres as an additional space for pets.

Many people in the region are still without power after the blizzard.

As of this afternoon, Canadian Niagara Power is reporting about 680 customers still without power.

In addition, Niagara Peninsula Energy is also reporting outages in Niagara Falls, Lincoln and West Lincoln.
