St. Catharines Trying for Development Near Hospital

It has to do with a vacant lot, and quest for residential properties

The City of St. Catharines is waiting for a plan from city staff to spur residential construction on a vacant property near the hospital.

Councillor Matt Harris says developers are holding back due to a requirement there be enough potential jobs in the area.

He adds staff are looking at how to get around, or reduce, the 1,500 job requirement for that site.  "There's lots of opportunities to put employment lands throughout the region, like along the 140, or the QEW.  You don't put it where you're going to have subdivisions, like, we need housing in St. Catharines, we're landlocked."

The current owners of the site want relief on the number of jobs required.

He then looks across the street from the hospital.  "There's a plaza there... and that's a perfect example of what you could do, put some condos there with ground floor retail, but you're not going to get all these jobs at one site."

He says city staff will come back with a plan at month's end.
