Jennie Stevens says all levels of government must also work together on housing issues
St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens is calling on the Ford government to help increase affordable housing and mental health resources in Niagara.
A letter has been written to Premier Doug Ford, saying a comprehensive plan is needed for the homelessness crisis.
This comes after St. Catharines mayor Mat Siscoe told Niagara Region Public Health that all levels of government are failing the city in regards to this issue.
"The mayor of St. Catharines has been advocating for an emergency increase in funding and support for affordable housing to ensure this vibrant community feels supported and cared for. We wholeheartedly echo this call to action and support the call for support from all levels of government."
In the letter, Stevens says a lot of residents are falling behind as the cost of living continues to rise.
"It is important to emphasize that the support we need is for holistic support that emphasizes affordable housing, not just for addictions and mental health support. The homelessness crisis is complex and can only be addressed through a holistic and comprehensive plan that will not leave anyone behind. Right now, with costs of living out of control, too many people are falling behind."
She is calling on the province to increase funding for affordable housing and mental health support, and has invited the Premier to tour downtown St. Catharines.
