Self-Cleaning Washroom to be Moved

City of St. Catharines putting it in storage, until another site found... due to too much vandalism

A unanimous vote at St. Catharines city council to put the self-cleaning washroom on Geneva Street into storage, until a new site is found.

It's being moved due to repeated vandalism, leaving the washroom closed often.

Councillor Kevin Townsend, expressing disappointment similar to his colleagues, noted it was for the public use, a public investment.  "However, what we've seen is just absolute destruction of public property.  What is the turnout time, because the public will certainly be upset with it, just sitting in storage, especially after a significant investment of taxpayer money?"

City staff expect it to be moved this year, and hopefully re-located soon after.

The city's Chief Administrative Officer David Oakes.

"During COVID, times were different.  A lot of public spaces, public venues, were closed, so there weren't any facilities available.  So, we did install portables in throughout the downtown, and this was another option."

Councillor Robin McPherson adds before the washroom was installed, area businesses had problems with public use of washrooms.
