Region Seeking Control of Highway 20 Section

City of Thorold has asked this for a section of the road, considering future growth

The Niagara region's public works committee is looking to transfer control of Highway 20, between Townline Road and Highway 58, from the province to the region.

The City of Thorold has asked for this, indicating future growth in that area could be impeded under the province.

Director of Transportation Services Frank Tassone adds under the MTO, installing buried infrastructure can be difficult.  "I know that in this particular case, the Ministry of Transportation was requesting the City of Thorold install their watermain in a steel casing pipe, which is very unorthodox for regular servicing."

He says the section of road in question includes roughly near the rail tracks by Highway 58.

He also says right now it costs about $70,000 yearly to maintain the road.  "If negotiations go well, and we're in a position to recommend the ultimate transfer, a secondary report will come before council to highlight all the costs involved, and seek council's approval to move forward with that transfer."

He adds to transfer control of the road doesn't cost anything.
