A resolution unanimously passed to work against US tariffs, promote positive trade partnership, prevent dollars from going out of the country
A unanimous vote at Niagara region to keep encouraging local shopping, and a positive trade partnership with the United States, amid in-coming tariffs.
Councillor Diana Huson's motion also called for federal and provincial action to reduce interprovincial trade barriers.
Councillor Mat Siscoe noted what's happening in Niagara. "There will be a bridge building project, and expansion of the highway. As I said to a neighbour on the weekend, it would be a darn shame if those dollars were spent and flowed out of the country, as opposed to staying in our communities."
The motion also seeks greater trade around the world, not just Europe.
It also notes 30,000 Niagara jobs rely on exports to the US.
Councillor Rob Foster added it goes both ways. "We also have to remember that 54% of our imports that are coming in for our Niagara area businesses are coming from the States as well, so this is a very dangerous thing. Tariffs going into play are going to have a significant impact on businesses both ways."
The passed resolution to be sent to the federal and provincial governments, as well as other municipal leaders.
