Region Holds to Canadian Flag, Colours Only

It voted 26-2, even after Palestinians and supporters asked their flag and colours be shown

Niagara regional council is not budging in its stance that only the Canadian flag and colours been shown at regional headquarters.

That's how it voted last week, 26-2, after the Israeli flag and colours were shown following the October 7th attacks on Israel by Hamas.

Palestinians and supporters, including St. Catharines resident Susan Howard- Azzeh, wanted council to include Palestinian colours.  "Why were the Ukranian colours lit?  Why were the colours of the Israeli regime lit?  To show compassion for a loss of life?  Do Palestinian lives not deserve the same illustration of compassion?"

Council was told by numerous speakers this is racist and discriminatory, Palestinians adding they also need support.

Councillor Diana Huson said her constituents are concerned about jobs, roads, taxes, and garbage pickup.

"Help people access social assistance payments, we help with subsidized housing... we have a number of responsibilities, but those don't include foreign affairs.  And, that doesn't mean we don't care about people."

Councillor Tim Rigby said discussion is needed with all groups, not just Palestinians.
