Niagara Region's public works committee also told St. Paul Street West bridge to be finished ahead of schedule, which includes work at GO station and Ridley Road
We know who will be rebuilding the St. Paul Street West CNR bridge in St. Catharines, and work on the GO station and Ridley Road.
The Niagara Region's public works committee awarded it to a local company, Rankin Construction, at the company's bid price of almost $35-million.
St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe was pleased the bridge work is being prioritized, and finished a year earlier. "Ridley Road is currently being used as one of the by-passes, whether officially or not, that's how residents are making their way through the neighbourhood. There was some concern expressed to me that Ridley Road was starting to be torn up at the same time that St. Paul Street West and the bridge was still out of commission, which would make things even more difficult."
A number of councillors noted the difficulty faced by area businesses with the bridge closed, including Sal Sorrento.
"Just to echo what one of my colleagues said... I really do feel for the people, the local business owners over there, I don't want to see anyone lose their business, that's tough. But, we need the bridge, we need the infrastructure, so we really don't have a choice."
He had staff clarify that CN Rail is taking care of 50% of the cost.
The bridge was closed, and to be rebuilt, since it was deemed as unsafe, built about 100 years ago.
