170 workers walked off the job at 12:01 a.m. today
The union representing 170 safety inspectors in the province confirms its workers are now on strike.
OPSEU/SEFPO says negotiations have broken down over wages, benefits and staffing issues.
The striking workers inspect amusement park rides, food trucks, elevators, fuel burning equipment, boilers and pressure vessels and elements in nuclear power plants, as well as support to police and fire services.
The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) posted its own statement on its website earlier this week when strike notice was issued, saying contingency plans are in place in the event workers walk off the job.
