Province to Appoint Regional Facilitators

Assigned to several regions, to help meet housing goals

Niagara is about to get a regional facilitator, as part of the province's plan to develop housing on parts of the Greenbelt.

Housing Minister Steve Clark says the province plans to appoint facilitators in Niagara, Durham, Halton, Waterloo, York and Simcoe County by September 11th.

They will be responsible for assessing whether communities can support future growth and meet the needs of residents, especially when it comes to housing targets.

"Our government remains intently focused on helping Ontarians find the homes they need and deserve," said Minister Clark. "We are working closely with our municipal partners to ensure they have the tools they need to meet their housing targets and will keep fighting to reach our goal of 1.5 million homes by 2031."

Earlier today, Clark also announced plans to update the province's definition of affordable housing.

He says the province plans to change the Development Charges Act to incorporate both income and market factors in the definition.

Affordable homes that meet the definition would be eligible for discounts and exemptions on fees related to development, to reduce the cost of building, buying and renting affordable homes.
