Province introduces legislation to maintain a minimum level of emergency supplies.
The province has introduced legislation to to ensure a minimum stockpile of personal protective equipment and critical supplies are available at all times.
If passed, the Personal Protective Equipment Supply and Production Act (PPESPA) would require the province to maintain a significant level of necessities in case of an emergency.
Ross Romano, Minister of Government and Consumer Services says the move will help the province in the event of future crises.
"With this legislation, we’re getting done what previous governments failed to do - keeping a healthy stockpile of quality critical supplies, made in Ontario whenever possible, to ensure the preparedness, safety, and security of Ontarians for whatever future crisis might face us."
The PPESPA would require annual reporting by the Minister of Government and Consumer Services on the state of the province's stockpile of PPE and critical supplies.
It would also issue fines for anyone offering to sell or selling government-supplied PPE or critical supplies provided for free.
Individuals would face a $20,000, and corporations would pay up to $250,000.
