$10-million to be spent on learning to build and repair ships, including in Hamilton and Thunder Bay
Ontario Shipyards in St. Catharines to be included in a $10-million provincial investment to develop workers' skills across the province.
Premier Doug Ford was joined by the Labour Minister and Mayor Mat Siscoe at the yard for the announcement this afternoon.
He added shipyards in Hamilton and Thunder Bay will also benefit. "For careers in the millwright, welding, electrical and painting trades, and many more. It will give new workers hands on experience in ship building, and ship repair, and it will help recruit and retain workers."
The premier added billions of dollars in contracts are being awarded in other provinces, but nothing in Ontario, and that needs to change.
He also mentioned the rest of the Niagara region.
"We've expanded GO train service between Toronto and Niagara Falls, we're investing in roads and highways, like the QEW and Garden City skyway bridge twinning project. We're building the South Niagara hospital, and that's going up rapidly."
The government says over the next decade thousands of millwrights, mechanics, welders, electricians and painters will be needed.
