Premier Ford Pushing Feds to Increase Its Share of Canada Health Transfer Funding

Premier Doug Ford urging federal government to increase the federal share of health care costs through the Canada Health Transfer to 35 percent.

Ontario's Premier is asking the federal government to increase its share of Canada Health Transfer costs.

After a virtual meeting of Canada's Premiers, Doug Ford released a statement, saying the federal government needs to do more to help the country's health care system.

"As Premiers have advocated for over the past few years, we need the federal government to join us at the table as a fuller partner and provide provinces and territories with sustainable, predictable, and adequate health care funding for the long-term," Ford notes. "Rebuilding our health care system after a once-in-a-century pandemic requires an all-hands-on-deck approach. It is more important than ever that the federal government work with provinces and territories to urgently resolve the structural funding shortfall facing our health care systems."

Canada's Premiers are calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to commit to increasing the federal share of provincial and territorial health care costs through the Canada Health Transfer to 35 percent.

They're also urging the Prime Minister to maintain this level over time with an appropriate escalator.
