One idea is to bury lines along Highway 20, starting in 2034, another is to partially bury them
A debate at Pelham town council about burying hydro lines along Highway 20, starting in 2034, at a cost of almost $3.8-million.
Council decided to wait for a report on partial burial to come later this year.
Councillor Shellee Niznik wants the original plan, adding they can save to 2034. "Those lines definitely do impede the beauty of our town. Also, I think for storms, we do have some significant storms. We get a lot of complaints about power outages. If those lines were underground, that would not occur."
On the other hand, Councillor Brian Eckhardt does not see how burying the lines helps with power outages.
Councillor Kevin Ker says a lot can happen in ten years.
"There may be new advances in technology within 10 years that none of us can imagine, that may make this far less costly, or far more costly. And if it's far more costly, then we eliminate it at that point. I'm looking more at the 2026 and 2027 items that are listed in our capital budget."
City staff added they also have to consider other cable services that are already buried in the area.
