Pelham town council is considering joining a national buying group that enables members to receive discounts when making purchases.
There are no membership fees, and connects buyers with local suppliers.
Sarah Hubble is with Canoe Procurement Group Canada, and says the supplier handles the cost through administration fee, such as 2%, for example. "1% would go for the administrator's time in the procurement, the other 1% goes to Canoe, and what we do with our portion is divide it in half again. We give half of that fee of ours to the municipal association within the province of which the purchase was made."
She adds Timmins bought a plow through Canoe and saved about $50,000.
She advises council what to do if using a local supplier already registered with Canoe. "They should be educated on their Canoe contract, if they're not, we have a supplier and contract team that can re-educate them. Let them know that you are now a member of Canoe, and you're looking for whatever equipment you need through their Canoe contract."
Many Niagara municipalities are already with the group.
