A local church group trying to help the homeless in Niagara.
Niagara Falls Christian Ministries Pastor Rose Amer told the city that Austin, Texas has helped people using tiny homes.
Councillor Lori Lococo agreed, adding Austin started with about 200, now closing in on 2,000. "They went on the outside of Austin because of all the zoning requirements, so they couldn't do it in the city, so they went a little bit out. And so people said 'Why are you putting this way out there'. There was a bus that they go use to go into the city, it's really amazing."
The councillor said the Niagara region is trying many things, including building up, and not out, due to lack of land.
But she added that's just one option. "We're looking at model homes, we're looking at sea containers, we're looking at storage units, there's a whole bunch of different things. What it all boils down to is community, having those wrap around services to help people. You can't just give a unit to someone and expect them to thrive."
The councillor added a tiny home in Niagara needs more work due to the colder climate.
