Officer Spit in Face During Arrest

Happened during violent robbery at store in Niagara Falls, after man refused to pay

A violent robbery in Niagara Falls has led to a number of charges against a 31-year old man.

Police were called last night around 7, to a store on Lundy's Lane near Glenholme, to reports of a man who claimed to have a gun and knife, and was threatening, and violently resisting and assaulting store staff.

When a police officer arrived, he found the suspect trying to escape from two store employees.  As the officer arrested the man, police say he spit in the officer's face.  The suspect also repeatedly kicked the interior of the police car, causing damage.

Police learned it started when the suspect tried to leave without paying for roughly $10 worth of snacks.

The store employees received minor injuries.

Kevin Tomas Matthews, of Lanark, which is between Kingston and Ottawa, has been charged.

  • Theft Under $5000
  • Uttering Threats (2 Counts)
  • Assault (2 Counts)
  • Assault a Peace Officer
  • Mischief Over $5000

He remained in police custody pending a bail hearing today in St. Catharines.
