NRP Warn of Another Online Scam

This one has to do with Facebook Marketplace

A warning from Niagara regional police to be wary of another Facebook Marketplace scam.

Police say criminals are posting on a fake Facebook account an item for sale.

They ask a potential buyer for an e-transfer as a deposit before the item is handed over.

Once the e-transfer is sent, the account disappears, and the seller no longer replies to the buyer.

Police add there are many tips to protect yourself, including not sending an e-transfer before getting the item, and find the seller's contact information.

• Locate and verify the sellers contact information (address, phone number, email) before you buy.

• Look for customer reviews and ratings from third-party sources.

• Pick-up items and provide the payment in person, whenever possible.

• Review all email information to make sure they are coming from a legitimate source.

• Never transfer funds in order to receive a payment for an item you're selling.

• Do an online search to see if anyone has already reported the fraudulent buyer or seller.
