Police say on one device was over 500,000 images, over 200 videos
Some very disturbing trends revealed to Niagara Regional police services board from its ICE unit, or Internet Child Exploitation unit.
Detective Sergeant Jason Myers said there are more and more cases of online child porn, not just nationally, but worldwide.
He pointed to Canadian statistics. "In 2011, there was just over 6,000, in 2019, it was just under 103,000. So those would be instances of people unloading, sharing child sexual abuse material online."
He added they aren't calling it child pornography anymore, but Child Sexual Abuse Material, which is more accurate.
His presentation to the police board also focused on the officers who deal with this material.
The Detective explained specially trained officers have to look at images with infants and toddlers, leading to officer wellness being an issue. "We've got a very close knit team, constantly taking wellness breaks, flexible schedules, team support and constant monitoring... help to prolong the effective time of these highly trained and specialized investigators."
The Detective revealed in one case, officers had to look at over 500,000 images, and over 200 videos, just on one device.
