Don’t even think about having a backyard fire this weekend if you live in a St. Catharines neighbourhood.
The city says they’re banned urban areas, according to the Open Air Burning Bylaw.
St. Catharines firefighters responded to several illegal open-air fires last weekend.
Anyone caught breaking the rule will have to pay at least $268.
Fire Chief Jeff McCormick says having a fire close to homes, decks and sheds in an urban area could lead to a disaster.
He says the fire could get out of control and spread to neighbouring properties.
The city’s bylaw does allow for some types of burning in agricultural areas.
