Niagara Parents Concerned about Child Care

Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates says spots could be lost at a Boys and Girls club

Concerned parents in the Niagara region are getting in touch with a local politician about possible reduction in child care spaces.

NDP MPP Wayne Gates says there could be a permanent reduction in before and after school spots at a Boys and Girls Club.

He says stagnant wages and overwhelming workloads are making it impossible for organizations to keep staff, and it's a problem province-wide.

He also says his office has worked with the Club at Riverview Public School to figure out a solution, but adds this is a bigger structural problem.

The NDP says there needs to be a better funding model from the Ontario government.

The YMCA, which is Ontario's largest provider of child care services, stressed to the government during pre-budget hearings that if the government doesn't act soon, it will be forced to close child care spots.
