Niagara Mayors Join 'Tariff Alliance'

They're joining mayors that border the US to find ways to deal with potential tariffs

Two mayors from the Niagara region are joining other mayors across the country that border the US in an effort to figure out US tariffs.

Fort Erie's Wayne Redekop says he and Niagara Falls mayor Jim Diodati are part of an alliance, started by Windsor's mayor.

He says border mayors are closer to the action than federal and provincial governments.  "We have a good understanding of the dynamic at the border, and what these types of policies implemented unilaterally have on life on the border, and what it's going to mean on our economies."

He adds Gary Zalepa of Niagara on the Lake may join the alliance.

Redekop says he's meeting with Buffalo's mayor soon, to talk about daily cross border activity that they see.

"I just want to talk to him about that, and how they're feeling.  Find out if there are things that we can do together, to try and assist in getting this matter resolved in the long-term, and that's what other mayors along the border will be doing."

He says this is similar to what they did during COVID.
