Niagara Health Launches Assessment to Examine Quality of Care for Indigenous Patients

Assessment comes nearly one year after the death of an Indigenous patient.

Niagara Health is looking to improve patient care for Indigenous people.

Yesterday, an external assessment into emergency services at the St. Catharines site was launched.

The assessment comes after the death of Heather Winterstein, an Indigenous woman who attended the hospital late last year.

Her family claims she went to the hospital for severe backpain and was sent home with Tylenol.

She returned the next day and died in the hospital.

Niagara Health says the panel will get feedback from Indigenous patients and families, organizations, community services and healthcare partners.

Members of the Indigenous community are being invited to share their experiences here

The assessment is expected to conclude in the middle of next year.
