Niagara Falls Trying to Opt Out of Regional Waste Collection

Niagara Falls City Council would like to opt out of the Region's waste collection service.

Mayor Jim Diodati says they passed a motion last night, to formally ask the Region if the City can go off on it's own.

"City Council is very concerned about the direction that waste removal is going in the Region. They're cutting the garbage pickup service in half, and yet the price is going up 35 percent over the next three years."

The Region will switch to every-other-week garbage collection this October.

Diodati says a lot of people are upset about this, and council is not supportive of the change.

If the City does go off on it's own, staff would put out a tender for it's own service.

Diodati says this means the City would also be able to look into innovative ideas in order to reduce costs.
