Board says single-use plastics like cutlery, straws and stir sticks will not be used in schools.
The Niagara Catholic District School Board says it will end the usage of single-use plastics in its schools or sites, effective this September.
This includes items such as stir sticks and cutlery.
The move aligns with the federal government's ban on single-use plastics, as well as a call from Pope Francis to embrace lifestyle changes to benefit the planet.
Niagara Catholic will also require cafeteria suppliers to stop using single-use plastic utensils and straws at all Board sites by September 2023.
Education Director Camillo Cipriano says the board is strongly committed to protecting the environment.
"We believe that in taking this step, we are leading by example in a very tangible way, hopefully leaving a better planet behind than the one we inherited."
