NDP Demands Action on Intimate Partner Violence

St. Catharines MPP roasted government for sitting on a report for 2 years

St. Catharines NDP MPP is blasting the Ontario government for wanting another study as it backs an NDP bill declaring intimate partner violence an epidemic.

The 2015 Renfrew inquest made 86 recommendations to stop the violence, but the NDP says the government has rejected many of those.

During Question Period Jennie Stevens pointed out Niagara shelters have had to turn away nearly 1,000 women for lack of space.  "It's a disgrace, a complete disgrace.  You've had a plan on your desk for 2 years, and to agree to only now commit to another study is frankly not enough... Minister, boost the shelters!"

Minister of Social Services Michael Parsa said the government is making investments, and working alongside the federal government.

Stevens further pushed during Members' Statements period today.

"In Niagara, we endured a tragic femicide only a few months ago, and while we have the best service providers anywhere in the world, they need our help right now.  We need immediate robust solutions, education and training within our criminal justice system."

Last September the Niagara region declared intimate partner violence an epidemic.
