MPP Stevens Asking Ford to Help Local Medical Manufacturer

Jennie Stevens says St. Catharines medical manufacturer Biolyse shouldn't be denied access to the Canadian market.

St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens is sticking up for a local medical manufacturer.

During Question Period today, Stevens asked Premier Doug Ford why cancer drug manufacturer Biolyse is being forced out of the Canadian market.

"The pandemic showed us all that Ontario needs local capacity to make the medicines we need so that we don’t have to rely on other countries for critical health care."

Stevens says the company is at risk of being put out of business.

"Biolyse, Ontario’s only local manufacturer of injectable cancer drugs, is at risk of being forced out of the Canadian market. The company has a 25-year history of producing medicine and creating good paying jobs in St. Catharines. It’s a shining example of a made-in-Ontario solution to our health care needs."

Hospitals in Ontario buy drugs through large purchasing organizations such as HealthPro, which Stevens says rejected an offer from Biolyse despite it being the lowest bidder for a three year contract.
