More nurses on the way.

Ontario nursing schools are reporting a surge in the number of applicants as the pandemic puts a spotlight on the health-care workforce.

Both universities and colleges say the number of nursing school applicants has increased by about 25 per cent this year compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Educators and post-secondary groups say those strong application numbers have been driven by the media attention on pandemic-era front-line workers and recent staffing shortages.

The Council of Ontario Universities says the province has also increased funding for nursing school seats, with an expected 786 new spots this year compared to 2020.
