Local MPP Wants Action on Cost of Living

Jennie Stevens says rising cost of living is bringing more people to food banks.

St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens is urging the Ford government to address the cost-of-living crisis.

Stevens says as inflation continues to rise, the province needs to bring back rent control and crack down on price gouging at grocery stores.

"Today food banks across Niagara are joining together to sound the alarm and ask for help dealing with unprecedented demand," said Stevens. "The skyrocketing cost of living is leaving people behind and forcing people to turn to food banks even with a full-time job."

This comes as a group of local food banks reports a significant spike in demand across Niagara this year.

According to Feed Niagara, there was a 64 percent jump in first time visitors this year over pre-pandemic levels.

It's also the sixth year in a row that food bank use has been on the rise in the region.

All of the ten Feed Niagara food banks are reporting a surge in demand this year.
