Niagara has its first confirmed case of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes in 2023
Public Health says the region has its first confirmed case of West Nile Virus in mosquitos this year.
Officials say the mosquitoes that tested positive were in St. Catharines, but all residents in Niagara are advised to be cautious.
Public Health says you can protect yourself in the following ways:
- Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes when outdoors
- Use mosquito repellent containing DEET or Icaridin, and carefully follow the manufacturer’s directions
- Drain areas of standing or stagnant water on your property regularly, including bird baths, old tires, pails, toys and wheelbarrows
- Ensure all windows and doors in your home have screens that are in good condition
So far this year, there aren't any human cases of the virus in Niagara.
