Last Day on the Job for John Tory

John Tory's resignation set to take effect at 5 p.m.

It's the final day on the job for Toronto's Mayor John Tory.

Tory shocked people in Toronto and across the country last week when he announced he had an ``inappropriate relationship'' with a former staffer in his office and would be stepping down.

The 68-year-old's resignation takes effect today at  5 p-m.

Tory remained in office this week to see his last budget debated at council.

Meantime, Premier Doug Ford says he'll  remain neutral in the mayoral byelection expected in June.

Ford’s office confirmed yesterday, he would work with whoever wins the contest.

Ford had urged Tory to stay on as mayor, and made comments Wednesday indicating a lefty mayor would be a "disaster for the city."

The Premier stressed however, he would not repeal the strong mayor powers he granted Tory and Ottawa's mayors which are designed to expedite housing construction.

There's speculation Liberal MPP Mitzie Hunter may throw her name into the race to replace Tory.
