Project could see Niagara become a major green energy hub.
Atura Power has selected Niagara Falls as the home of its first Ontario site for large-scale hydrogen production.
The announcement was made today by Energy Minister Todd Smith and Environment Minister David Piccini.
The Niagara Hydrogen Centre will use a 20 megawatt electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen.
The area was selection based on several Ontario location feasibility studies evaluating the viability of green hydrogen production.
Green and low-carbon hydrogen can reduce or offset emissions in a variety of ways, including powering fuel cells in vehicles, blending hydrogen with natural gas to reduce carbon impact, and low carbon substitute for feedstock in high-emitting industrial processes.
The province is supporting the project by providing an exemption from the Gross Revenue Charge.
Atura Power is in the process of finishing preliminary steps for the facility to support a final investment decision by summer 2022.
Pending an award of federal funding, the facility could be up and running by early 2024.
