
The New York Power Authority says it depends on the weather
The authority has asked for approval from the International Joint Commission to put the ice boom in a week early than originally scheduled.
The boom typically goes in when the water temperature in Lake Erie reaches 4 C.
The temperature has been around 4.4 C this week.
The boom is placed at the mouth of the river to reduce the amount of ice from Lake Erie and prevent ice blockages from interfering with hydropower production.
