The 41-unit affordable housing site will be for low income seniors, single parent families, homeless people
A $16-million affordable housing unit is officially opening tomorrow in Port Colborne.
CEO of Port Cares Christine Clark LeFleur tells us the 41-unit building, at 9 Chestnut Street, will provide rooms for low income seniors, single parent families, and those who are currently homeless.
She says a young mother is moving in, who's been living on someone's couch. "This young woman, who has had such a struggle, who wants nothing but what every other mother wants for her child, was just speechless, she couldn't take a breath, she was so overwhelmed."
She adds rent is anywhere from $400 to $700 a month.
There's been some federal government help, but largely local fundraising.
She adds the Niagara region provided the land, and there was a lot of community effort. "Fortunate for Port Cares, and this project, we had incredible local support, particularly in the form of construction, through Rankin Construction. They had never built affordable housing before, but became integral partners."
She says they screen candidates to ensure their financial status qualifies them.
