Housing Supply Needs to Triple: Mayor

Mat Siscoe says more regional direction is needed, which helps in advocating to the province

Bit of pressure on the Niagara Region's Public Health Committee for more direction in increasing supportive housing units.

That from Councillor and St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe, who says his council will continue to look for more land to build on, but they need triple the current supply.

He understands the pressures on all governments.  "If there are resources that need to be added, to allow this process to accelerate, I'm willing, and I'm sure many of my colleagues, especially on this committee, would be willing to put those resources in place."

The region is moving forward with 3rd party non profits to ease the workload.

"My concern in the beginning, was that we were just being symbolic.  I think this council has demonstrated that we're not, we're putting our money where our mouth is.  Having that plan in place, as soon as possible, makes our lives easier to advocate to other levels of government, because these issues are coming to a head."

The Commissioner of Community Services says staff will get more direction for Niagara municipalities.
