Homelessness/Addiction Discussed at ROMA

Regional councillor Albert Witteveen also brought forth high rental rates to provincial politicians

A West Lincoln regional councillor is working to make sure high rental rates and homelessness are brought to the attention of provincial politicians.

Albert Witteveen was at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association meeting last week in Toronto, discussing with provincial politicians how current assistance rates are not enough to help people adequately meet basic expenses such as rent, food and utilities.

"We see seniors also that are looking for something that will fit into their budget, and the market has driven a lot of these people to spend a large portion of their income towards just staying housed," he says.

He adds they talked about the lack of affordable housing, and how that can lead to homelessness and addiction problems.

The councillor has also been pressing the province over infrastructure investment, such as projects in St. Anne's, as well as other work.  "To see what other programs would be available to us, since we, in West Lincoln, have around 400kms of roads and a number of bridges."

He also joined a Niagara on the Lake delegation, meeting the Minister of Agriculture to discuss irrigation to ensure crop production is successful.
