Hirji Calls On Province to Prioritize Vaccines for Niagara

Niagara's top doctor is disappointed that the province has not prioritized vaccines for Niagara.

In a post on his Twitter page, Doctor Mustafa Hirji criticized the provincial government for not including Niagara in the list of regions aiming to innoculate residents, staff and essential caregivers of long-term care homes by January 21st.

He says that within the last two weeks, 33 residents in the region's retirement and long-term care homes have died of COVID-19.

He also says that a significant number of doses distributed in Ontario have been administered.

"COVID19Tracker.ca reports that only 1/3 of vaccine doses distributed in Ontario have thus far been administered to Ontarians, only half of that to staff in LTCH/RH, and only 2% to the residents of LTC who are most likely to pass away. These deaths are preventable."

Hirji is urging the provincial government to prioritize our local long-term care and retirement home residents through a vaccination campaign led by Niagara Public Health.
