Niagara Parks testing this in Fort Erie at Gonder's Flats, instead of chemicals, which is used in other parts of world
If you've been to Gonder's Flats in Fort Erie this week, you'll notice a herd of goats grazing.
Victoria Kalenuik is the Environmental Planning Technician with Niagara Parks, and says they have a contract with a local farmer who dropped them off on Monday to eat an invasive species, as opposed to using chemicals.
She adds goats are able to eat a wide variety of things. "They've only been there for three days, they have 2 days to go, and they're doing great. In the area we had set out, 3 blocks, which was about a hectare, they've probably eaten about 75% of it."
She adds this is a test project for the week, but it's likely to gain traction.
"Because of the specific area, we aren't able to use our particular methods used in the past, which would be mowing or applying herbicides, we had to think outside the box on this one. That's what we came up with."
She says goats are used for this around the world.
