Fort Erie Woman to be Featured on APTN

Kya Steinbach-Parker appears on WarriorUp

A 19-year old Fort Erie high school student is going nationwide to promote Indigenous youth leaders, and reconciliation in the education system.

Kya Steinbach-Parker will be featured on APTN, the Aboriginal Peoples' Television Network, Saturday morning, after the channel filmed her work at Greater Fort Erie Secondary.

They were filmed on September 30th, in a parade for Truth and Reconciliation, as well as working on a tile, that represented Canada's history with residential schools.

She recalls what she did in 2022.  "I actually went to Winnipeg, through a program called Experiences Canada.  They got youth from all across Canada, to create podcasts, and I went to Winnipeg to record a podcast on reconciliation."

She says she got suggestions from Murray Sinclair, the former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

She thinks back to her younger self, as she considers her work today.  "If she heard about the stuff that Kya in Grade 11 and 12 did, she'd be very surprised.  I was much more introverted when I was younger, very shy, and didn't put myself out there."

Her mother came across a notice online about the APTN looking for submissions, and suggested to her daughter she put her name forth.
