Fort Erie Mayor to Visit Buffalo

Wayne Redekop doing what he can to stave off potential tariffs next week under Donald Trump

Reassurance from Fort Erie's mayor that Niagara politicians and business people are working to counteract potential tariffs from Donald Trump.

In fact, Wayne Redekop says he's meeting with Buffalo's mayor in the next week or two.

The mayor also recalls watching Trump say the US subsidizes Canada.  "To the tune of $100-billion per year, which is confusing trade in a trade surplus, with a subsidization.  When you have trade, you're exchanging money for goods, or vice versa, it's not a subsidy."

The mayor suspects this is all about Trump putting himself into position to negotiate something, but he's not sure what that could be.

He also says Trump could eliminate $130-billion in trade if the Americans stopped buying Canadian oil.  "Can't stop buying our oil, because we manufacture and ship to the United States the type of oil they use in refineries.  If they're not going to use our oil, they're going to have to retool their refineries."

He adds a tariff won't be paid by Canadian companies exporting, but Americans buying the product.
