Fort Erie Clings to Urgent Care Centre

Council is asking the province to wait for Dr. Philpott's report, before closing any centre in the province

It may seem like a daunting task, but the Town of Fort Erie keeps asking the province keep the urgent care centre open, until a report looking at how primary care is delivered.

The town passed a resolution last week, asking the province to wait for the work of Dr. Jane Philpott.

Mayor Wayne Redekop says they'll keep telling Niagara Health and the province the South Niagara hospital won't be enough to meet the region's needs, as it grows in the coming years.  "And at some point, we're going to get to the top of that hill, and that rock will be at the top of the hill.  So, right now we're in the stage where we're pushing that rock, and the rock keeps wanting to slide back, but, we're not going to give up, we're going to keep pushing until that rock gets to the top of the hill and stays there."

The urgent care centre is scheduled to close in 2028, when the South Niagara hospital opens.

A resolution was passed last week at council.

"Councillor McDermott's resolution was basically asking the provincial government not to close any urgent care centres in the province, until Dr. Philpott has finished her work.  Then we'll have a better understanding of what the logistics are, in implementing whatever she might recommend."

He's told Niagara Health and the province the South Niagara hospital won't meet future regional needs.
