Salem Chapel BME Church in St. Catharines is about to get $100,000 from the federal government.

St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle made the announcement today on his Twitter page.

The church  is known for being the home congregation of Harriet Tubman, one of the leading figures behind the abolitionist movement during the late 1800s.

She attended the congregation from 1851 until 1862.

Bittle says that the church is an important part of the city's history and will ensure that future generations know of Tubman's legacy.

"The funding will ensure that Tubman's story can be told for generations to come in a place she called home."
