Federal Government and First Nations Sign Historic Deal

$20 billion settlement agreement signed.

The Canadian government has signed a 20-billion-dollar final settlement agreement to compensate First Nations children and families who were harmed by chronic underfunding of child welfare.

The agreement was reached between the federal government, the Assembly of First Nations and plaintiffs in two class-action lawsuits.

Indigenous Services Canada says this is the largest such deal in Canadian history.

The deal still needs to be approved by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal and Federal Court.

The funds, which are expected to begin flowing in next year, account for half of a $40 billion agreement designed to reform the child welfare system.
